PicPlz Pretties Up Android App And Begins Accepting (Beta) API Applications

Last week, we noticed that the mobile photo-sharing app PicPlz rolled out a lot of improvements in their app in an effort to better compete with rival Instagram. Unfortunately, the new Polish was just for their iPhone app at the time. But today brings good news for Android fans: the same features! And there's a bonus: PicPlz is now accepting applications for access to their API.

PicPlz has more about the new capabilities for Android users here. Here are the main core of this update:

* Live thumbnail of the image with different filters.
* Fixed rare crash on sign up
* Fixed problem with notification, not clearing from the status bar
* Camera view is no longer being the brightness to 100%
* Fixed issue with camera is not properly detecting the flash mode on start-up
* Other misc bug fixes

They promise even more speed improvements in the next iteration. Android version is key for them because it is a way they are quite different from Instagram - still iPhone-only.

API, meanwhile, is another way they can potentially be distinguished - at least a bit. Interested parties are invited to join PicPlz API beta here.

Instagram caused a bit of a stink when they drew the third-party access to their data for a few weeks ago. It was not meant as a hostile act, just they want developers to wait to use their data until they have a decent API that can scale. "We are testing it internally and with selected partners at this time," they tell us.

The race is on.
