According to eMarketer, Apple is moving Research In Motion as a market leader in smartphones United States this year, only to be surpassed in 2012 by Android.eMarketer, which bases its estimates on an analysis of estimates of research and methodologies of several companies that control the smartphone market, estimates Apple has taken a 28% share of U.S. smartphone users in 2010, just over 24% of users using a device running Android.

RIM's share market is expected to decline to 25% in 2011, down 30% in 2010.

eMarketer predicts that the Android platform Google will continue to gain share through 2012, with 31% of all smartphone users with a handset running Android (against 6% in 2009).

In the meantime, the market share Apple would clock out at 30%, up slightly from 2009.

In the words of Noah Elkin, eMarketer senior analyst and author of a forthcoming report on mobile devices:

"With a growing list of manufacturing partners and support in all major markets and market segments, scale for Android is fast in terms of device market share, applications and advertising revenues.
